After last year’s successful exhibition, where we invited local artisans to make novel objects of our remnant timbers, we were approached by Camberwell College of Arts for a similar collaboration with the students of their MA Designer Maker course. The course sets out to assert the position of craft and making in the contexts of contemporary design discourse, society and humanity. For 18 months, students are tasked with developing a Designer-Maker practice through research and thinking-through-making principles.
Earlier in the year Solid Floor supplied the group with remnant timber in various forms: small hand samples, showroom panels of discontinued ranges, and surplus floorboards and parquet battens from installation. Their assignment consisted of designing and making products with the wood, whilst expanding on the research focus each student had set for themselves as part of their Master’s programme.
Our neighbour, Rees Architects, with whom we share premises on Ezra Street, was also working on a wall cladding project using the same remnant timbers. To the students, they volunteered from a different professional angle, their own feedback.
The concept of reuse – recycling materials into new contexts and exploring new prospects to work with them – allows the students to showcase the ideas and skills they are developing.
From this collaboration, we are pleased to present another exhibition for the Shoreditch Design Triangle celebrating the concept of re-use while reducing waste within our own company.
Expect to see innovative furniture, lighting, interactive toys, and even a board game in the exhibition, as the MA Maker students explore wide-ranging themes such as digital fetishism, play, spiritualism, and street subculture.
Rees Architects will, at the same time, be showcasing their timber wall cladding prototype while offering the opportunity to visit their studio space.
